A three system Strategy for research
At Menlo, we face several key challenges:
- Keeping pace with the latest industry research
- Implementing novel ideas effectively
- Exploring uncharted areas of AI
To tackle these challenges, we have adopted a three-system approach:
System 1: Foundational Research
We focus on researching fundamental building blocks—ideas that are new and largely unexplored (e.g., AlphaMaze, Ichigo, Poseless).
This ensures a steady pipeline of fresh, innovative concepts that can be developed further, ultimately leading to new implementations, applications, or even breakthroughs.
System 2: Applied Research & Integration
We actively collaborate and implement cutting-edge research in novel ways.
For example:
- Applying early fusion ideas from the Chameleon paper to Ichigo
- Incorporating semantics with synthetic datasets in the SpeechLess model
This approach keeps us aligned with the latest state-of-the-art (SOTA) advancements in the industry.
System 3: Unification & Deployment
We consolidate research efforts into unified downstream applications, leading to:
- Major contributions to open-source AI development
- Commercially viable AI solutions
By structuring our work this way, we ensure continuous innovation, strong industry relevance, and impactful AI development.
